Chicago Sky rookie forward Angel Reese sent shockwaves through the WNBA on Saturday night, revealing that her impressive first season in the league has come to an unexpected end.
Despite the Sky securing a spot in the 2024 WNBA playoffs with six regular-season games remaining, Reese took to social media to announce that she would not be returning to the court this season. In a heartfelt message, she reflected on her journey and hinted at what’s to come.
“What a year,” Reese wrote. “I never imagined my last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3, but maybe that was God’s way of giving them a taste of what they’ll be seeing more of in Year 2.”
What a year. The Sky initially listed Reese as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx due to a wrist injury sustained during their game against the Los Angeles Sparks. However, the team later confirmed that her season was officially over.
“Following further medical evaluation after the September 6 game against Los Angeles, Angel Reese has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season with a wrist injury,” the Sky announced. “Further medical updates will be provided as necessary.”
Reese’s season-ending injury comes as a huge blow, not only to Chicago but to the WNBA at large. The rookie sensation had been in the midst of a historic year, breaking records for double-doubles and rebounds by a first-year player. She was widely regarded as one of the top contenders for the Rookie of the Year award, alongside Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.
With such a standout season under her belt, Reese’s inability to finish out her rookie campaign has left fans and the league in shock, marking a sudden and unfortunate end to one of the most exciting breakout performances in recent memory.
