Sophomore wide receiver and punt returner Anthony Evans has stepped up significantly for the Georgia Bulldogs this season, showcasing his versatility and impact through the first two weeks.
In Georgia’s season opener against Clemson, Evans made three punt returns for 23 yards. He improved on that performance in Week 2, recording five punts for 62 yards, including a career-long 46-yard return in the 48-3 win over Tennessee Tech. Additionally, Evans contributed on offense with a reception for 11 yards.
Head coach Kirby Smart has taken notice of Evans’ contributions and praised his development ahead of the Bulldogs’ Week 3 showdown with Kentucky.
“Anthony is not just tough, but he’s also very confident in both his return and receiving skills,” Smart said. “He’s been working hard at both the slot and the Z receiver positions. With some injuries and depth issues, he’s had to step up at both spots.
“To handle these roles effectively, you need to be incredibly smart, and he’s done a fantastic job learning and executing at both positions. He’s had a significant impact on special teams and has shown a strong work ethic. I hold him to high standards as a returner, and I’m pleased with his progress. I want him to maintain his aggressiveness while being smart with the ball.”
As a true freshman last year, Evans played in eight games, returning four punts for 55 yards, including a 28-yard return against Alabama in the SEC Championship. He also scored his first career touchdown in the Orange Bowl.
If Evans continues his strong performance in practice, he is poised for a standout season in 2024.
