The Alabama Crimson Tide entered the 2024 season with plenty of uncertainty in their wide receiver room. With a mix of transfers, returning players, and an unknown freshman, the team faced some growing pains, especially in their early matchup against the USF Bulls. However, through two games, one thing has become clear: Ryan Williams is on the fast track to becoming a star.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer wasn’t surprised by Williams’ immediate impact, explaining that the breakout was something he’d seen coming for quite some time.
“He’s just got that maturity level,” DeBoer said. “Even though he’s only 17 and technically should still be in high school, he’s handled everything like a seasoned veteran.”
What’s most remarkable about Williams’ early success isn’t just his stats—207 receiving yards and three touchdowns over the past two games—but the fact that he’s doing this while still being eligible for high school football. At 17 years old, Williams should be preparing for prom and senior year exams, not torching D1 defenses. Yet, he’s been a standout for the Crimson Tide, showing composure and skill far beyond his years.
DeBoer emphasized Williams’ consistency and professional mindset, praising his approach to both practices and games. “There really haven’t been highs or lows,” DeBoer continued. “He just goes about each day, focused and ready to work. And that’s what’s been so impressive—he’s making big plays, but it’s his business-like mindset that sets him apart. He’s off to a fantastic start.”
The true test of Williams’ early success is coming up this weekend as Alabama faces off against Wisconsin. While the Badgers may not boast the toughest secondary, playing a Big Ten opponent on the road in a hostile environment will be a new challenge for the young wideout.
How will Williams respond to the pressure? All eyes will be on him to see if he can keep his momentum going against stiffer competition.
