As the Oregon Ducks gear up for their intense rivalry game against the Oregon State Beavers, Coach Dan Lanning has provided an update on the status of offensive lineman Matthew Bedford and addressed areas where the team needs to improve.
Bedford’s Potential Return
Coach Dan Lanning expressed optimism about Matthew Bedford’s availability for the upcoming game against Oregon State. Bedford, who has been sidelined with a knee injury since preseason camp, is showing improvement. Lanning noted that Bedford has been performing “better and better” in practice sessions.
Bedford, a high-profile transfer from Indiana, could be a crucial addition to the Ducks’ offensive line, which has struggled to meet expectations. The offensive line’s performance has been a concern, especially given that quarterback Dillon Gabriel has already been sacked more times in two games than last season’s quarterback Bo Nix was throughout the entire season. Despite this, the Ducks remain unbeaten with a 2-0 record, but improved protection is essential for their long-term success.
Defensive Focus Ahead of Oregon State
Coach Lanning also highlighted the need for defensive improvements, particularly in eliminating explosive plays and tightening up red zone defense. The Ducks have allowed touchdowns of 35 yards or more in each of their first two games—Idaho’s 36-yard trick play score and Boise State’s 70-yard rushing touchdown.
“Reducing explosive plays is a major focus,” Lanning said. “We need to be more effective in the red zone as well. We’ve allowed four touchdowns out of five red zone trips, which needs to be addressed.”
Rivalry Game Insights
As the Ducks prepare to face the Beavers, Lanning acknowledged that Oregon State will likely continue to emphasize a strong running game despite injuries on their offensive line. The matchup, taking place at Reser Stadium, will mark the 127th meeting between the two teams, with Oregon leading the all-time series 68-49 with 10 ties.
With Bedford’s potential return and the need for defensive adjustments, the Ducks are focused on refining their performance to maintain their unbeaten streak and tackle the challenges posed by their rivals.
