The biggest takeaway from Auburn’s 45-19 victory over New Mexico was redshirt freshman quarterback Hank Brown’s impressive first collegiate start. Head coach Hugh Freeze made the decision to shake up the offense early in the week, though neither Brown nor former starter Payton Thorne were informed of the change until just days before the game.
Despite less-than-ideal conditions—wet turf and scattered showers throughout the matchup—Brown delivered a standout performance. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 235 yards, throwing four touchdowns without a single interception. The young quarterback made the most of the opportunity, showcasing both poise and accuracy in a game that could set the tone for the rest of Auburn’s season.
While stepping into the starting role, Brown emphasized the kind of leader he aims to be for the Tigers. “As a leader, one thing I always strive to do is just be a servant to my teammates,” Brown said post-game. “However I can be there for them, however they need my help, I want to motivate and encourage them. It’s all about building relationships, learning their stories, and growing alongside them.”
Brown also praised Payton Thorne, the quarterback he replaced, for his support and leadership. “He’s been great,” Brown said of Thorne. “He’s awesome. He’s a leader and does a great job helping me from an experience standpoint. We’ve stayed in communication, and it’s been good.”
Even with the rainy weather, Brown had moments to showcase his arm strength, including a long sideline pass to wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith that thrilled the Auburn faithful. “It’s a great feeling, no doubt,” Brown said. “Hearing the crowd roar, it’s surreal, definitely exciting to get that first long one in.”
With his first start behind him, Brown’s focus now shifts to his upcoming SEC debut against Arkansas. Head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed after the game that Brown would remain the starter next week, and Brown is ready to rise to the challenge. “It’s encouraging, but I think I’ve got a lot to build on from this week,” he said. “I love when the competition level is raised—that’s when I’m playing my best. I’m excited for SEC play, and I’m excited to dominate Arkansas.”
Auburn will host Arkansas next Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN, and all eyes will be on Brown as he looks to continue his strong start and lead Auburn into a new phase of the season.
