The connection between Brock Purdy and Brandon Aiyuk has been one of the standout features of the San Francisco 49ers’ offense since Purdy took over as the starting quarterback. However, during the Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, it was evident that this dynamic duo still needs time to fully sync, particularly after Aiyuk’s extended contract dispute which limited his preseason practice.
Much like in the 49ers’ Week 1 victory, Aiyuk’s presence was subdued in the game against the Vikings. He managed just four receptions for 43 yards, while teammates Deebo Samuel and George Kittle played more prominent roles in the passing game.
Post-game, Aiyuk mentioned that he is currently at about 85 percent health. When asked about this assessment, Purdy offered a reassuring perspective on his All-Pro receiver, despite the underwhelming stats.
“I think he looks pretty good, and I don’t go into the game thinking B.A.’s not performing up to his usual standard,” Purdy said after the 23-17 loss. “I go through my reads and he’s where he needs to be. There might be a few routes where we both could improve, but that’s typical early-season stuff.”
Purdy emphasized his confidence in the duo’s ability to improve their chemistry as the season progresses. “I saw B.A. grinding and competing for four quarters. I’m proud of him for that,” he added.
Despite only having a two-game sample size, Aiyuk’s 71 yards so far this season fall short of expectations for a receiver with a $120 million contract over four years. However, Purdy’s extensive experience with Aiyuk, spanning close to 30 games, supports his belief that their connection will strengthen.
The 49ers’ offensive performance against Minnesota was solid, but the absence of Christian McCaffrey was clearly felt. This highlights the pressing need for Aiyuk to step up and contribute more significantly as the season unfolds.
