Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord recently shared a heartfelt message for Ohio State, a program that played a key role in his football journey. While his time with the Buckeyes didn’t pan out as he had envisioned, McCord holds no grudges and still feels a strong connection to Ohio State and its fans.
After transferring to Syracuse following last season, McCord watched as Ohio State brought in Kansas State transfer Will Howard to take over at quarterback. Despite showing flashes of potential in Columbus, McCord never quite found the right fit and ultimately parted ways with the Buckeyes in what appeared to be a mutual decision.
In a candid appearance on SiriusXM’s *Rise and Schein* podcast with Adam Schein, McCord reflected on his time at Ohio State and expressed gratitude for the support he received from the fanbase.
“I appreciate all of them,” McCord said. “I still root for Ohio State. I’ve got a lot of friends who are still on the team, and I stay in touch with some of the coaches. I still cheer them on. The fans have been incredible. I met so many great people in the Ohio State community who continue to reach out and support me. It’s been awesome. There’s nothing but love for the Buckeyes from my side.”
Since the split, things have worked out well for both McCord and Ohio State. Will Howard has been performing admirably for the Buckeyes, while McCord has been thriving with the Syracuse Orange. Through two games, McCord has completed 59-of-85 passes for 735 yards, throwing eight touchdowns with just one interception—some of the best football of his career.
Reflecting on his time at Ohio State, McCord expressed gratitude for the lessons learned, despite the disappointments along the way.
“I’m extremely thankful for how it all played out,” McCord explained. “In the moment, it’s not always how you imagine it, especially after losing to Michigan. But I learned so much about myself—both as a player and as a person—during my time there. Those experiences have prepared me for everything that’s ahead in my career.”
While some Ohio State fans may have been upset by McCord’s departure, his comments make it clear that there’s no bad blood between him and the program. In fact, both sides seem to wish each other the best, with McCord’s continued support likely leaving Buckeye fans rooting for his success at Syracuse.
