The Tennessee Vols will be facing a significant challenge when they take on the Oklahoma Sooners, as they’ll be without a key player for the high-stakes matchup.
According to ESPN’s senior college football writer Pete Thamel, left tackle Lance Heard has been officially ruled out for Saturday night’s game due to a leg injury. The injury was sustained following Tennessee’s 51-10 win over NC State and has since kept Heard sidelined.

Initially, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel suggested that Heard’s absence in last week’s game against Kent State was precautionary, to ensure his availability for the rest of the season. However, Heard’s status was downgraded from questionable to out after Thursday’s availability report, indicating the injury is more serious than initially thought.
This is undoubtedly a blow to the Vols’ offense. Heard, a highly anticipated transfer from LSU, has been impressive throughout the season, showcasing a rare blend of size, strength, and agility that has solidified his place on Tennessee’s offensive line.
In Heard’s absence, redshirt senior Dayne Davis will step up as the starting left tackle. The 6’7″, 333-pound veteran from Bluff City, Tennessee, will be making his second consecutive start and the eighth of his college career. Davis has shown his capability to protect quarterback Nico Iamaleava in previous games, including last week’s win over Kent State and his starting appearance in Tennessee’s 35-0 victory against Iowa in the Citrus Bowl. While Davis brings experience to the table, the loss of Heard’s dynamic presence is still a significant setback.
As Tennessee prepares to face off against a formidable Oklahoma team in Norman, the Vols will have to rely on their depth and Davis’ experience to keep their offense on track.
Kickoff between Tennessee and Oklahoma is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, and the Vols will need all hands on deck to overcome this crucial loss.
