Mercedes Formula 1 chief Toto Wolff has accused Christian Horner of trying to “stir the pot” with his suggestion that Red Bull may be interested in signing George Russell.
The second driver situation at Red Bull has come under scrutiny this season due to Sergio Perez’s struggles, which have allowed McLaren to close the gap in the standings. Although there were discussions about Perez’s future during the summer break, he remains under contract until 2026.
Daniel Ricciardo’s lackluster performance has fueled speculation about his position at Red Bull. Many believe he may give way to reserve driver Liam Lawson, who impressed when he filled in for Ricciardo last season.
Horner acknowledged that Ricciardo was an insurance policy for Perez but hinted that Lawson could take over that role if necessary. When asked about Lawson’s potential for a 2024 drive, Horner noted the importance of keeping driver contracts confidential but expressed confidence in Lawson’s abilities.
Red Bull Open to External Drivers
Horner emphasized that Red Bull “demands results,” indicating a willingness to explore options beyond its current driver lineup. He mentioned Russell, whose contract with Mercedes extends through 2025, as a potential target in response to rumors linking Max Verstappen to a move to another team.
“It would be unwise not to consider other talented drivers,” Horner stated.
Mercedes Dismisses Red Bull’s Interest in Russell
In response, Wolff, who has previously expressed interest in signing Verstappen for Mercedes, firmly stated that Russell is committed to the team. “Christian is always trying to stir things up,” he remarked, adding, “It’s part of the game. George is a Mercedes driver, and we intend for him to remain one.”
As both teams navigate the complexities of driver contracts and performance expectations, the dialogue between Wolff and Horner highlights the competitive nature of Formula 1 and the ongoing speculation surrounding driver lineups.
