The Chicago Bears are facing a challenge on the offensive line this week as they prepare for their next game, following the absence of a crucial starter during Wednesday’s practice. Head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed that right tackle Darnell Wright was sidelined with a back injury, prompting the team to explore different lineup combinations.
Exploring Depth and Flexibility
In light of Wright’s absence, Eberflus emphasized the need for flexibility and depth along the offensive line. He mentioned that the Bears would be utilizing various combinations to fill the gap left by Wright, showcasing the versatility of their roster.
One immediate candidate for the right tackle position is Matt Pryor, who filled in at right guard for Nate Davis during Week 3 due to injury. Pryor has experience playing both right guard and right tackle, logging 68 snaps at guard and 8 at tackle during the preseason. Eberflus noted that he was largely impressed with Pryor’s performance against the Colts, despite a few mistakes.
“First of all, his attitude is great. He’s a great teammate who works well with Darnell right next to him. I think those two form a solid partnership. He’s a real good athlete for his size, and his firmness is beneficial for the quarterback. He can also move people on double teams and single blocks. Overall, I think he did a really good job improving and learning our system,” Eberflus remarked.
However, the decision to move Pryor to right tackle hinges on the health of Nate Davis. Davis, who is recovering from a groin injury, played only one snap at right guard in Week 3 after Pryor was temporarily shifted to left tackle when Braxton Jones exited the game.
If the Bears decide to keep Pryor at right guard, they may turn to third-round rookie Kiran Amegadje as a replacement for Wright at tackle. Amegadje was active for the first time last week, signaling progress in his development.
“Kiran’s looked really good. He is definitely one of our options,” Eberflus stated. “He’s smart in terms of the mental aspects and technique, and he’s improving each week. We’re working hard to get him to where he needs to be.”
The Bears aim to avoid constant reshuffling along the line, focusing instead on finding their best and healthiest starting five players to ensure stability.
Injury Report Updates
Following Wednesday’s practice, the injury report revealed a mix of positive and concerning news. A key highlight was the return of wide receiver Keenan Allen, who had missed the last two games and practice sessions due to a heel injury. Although he did not travel for last Sunday’s game for personal reasons, Allen participated in limited drills, showcasing his recovery progress.
“He was working over the weekend with the rehab group, so that’s looking good,” Eberflus said. “We hope it’s something that’s going to get better and stay better, and we’re optimistic about that.”
In addition to Wright, three other players did not practice on Wednesday: Terell Smith (hip), Zacch Picens (groin), and Darrell Taylor (illness). Meanwhile, Nate Davis (groin), Andrew Billings (knee), Khari Blasingame (hand/knee), Braxton Jones (knee), and Montez Sweat (elbow) were all limited participants.
As the Bears navigate these challenges, the focus remains on building a cohesive and effective offensive line, aiming to turn around their season and improve their offensive output.
