The Ducks and Coach Dan Lanning’s family are paying tribute to the fight against cancer with their new “Heroes” uniform design.
For the Lanning family, this cause hits close to home. Dan Lanning’s wife, Sauphia, is a cancer survivor, and her experience reflects a shared struggle that touches almost everyone. Whether through personal battles or supporting friends and family, few in Autzen Stadium are untouched by cancer.
Kenny Farr, Oregon’s Football Equipment Administrator, explained how Sauphia’s survival made this game particularly meaningful. “We’ve done many Cancer Awareness games over the years, but with her beating cancer, this one is special,” Farr said.
In a unique twist, Sauphia and her sons were given the opportunity to collaborate on the design. “We let them take the lead on creating the new uniform,” Farr added. Another designer involved in the project shared his excitement: “This is one of my favorite uniforms we’ve ever done, knowing the personal story behind it.”

As the Ducks prepare to take the field against Michigan State on Friday, they will carry the weight of this powerful story with them. The details in the uniform not only honor survivors but also the medical professionals who dedicate their lives to combating these diseases. For many players, this will be a deeply emotional game as they reflect on the loved ones in their own lives who have faced cancer.
Farr emphasized the significance of the event, saying, “This is about more than just football.”
Now seven years cancer-free, Sauphia Lanning expressed her gratitude. “It’s a cause that means so much to us, and we’re incredibly thankful,” she said.
