Ohio State has maintained an impressive 4-0 record this season, following a commanding 38-7 victory against Michigan State on the road, marking the first Big Ten game for both teams.
The Buckeyes showcased their offensive prowess, amassing nearly 500 yards of total offense. Quarterback Will Howard led the charge, contributing significantly to the passing game, which totaled 298 yards. Freshman standout Jeremiah Smith has emerged as a key target throughout the season, continuing to make waves.
In the game against the Spartans, Smith recorded five receptions for 83 yards, along with a touchdown both through the air and on the ground. His remarkable one-handed touchdown catch added to his growing reputation, making it seem like a routine performance for the talented freshman.
“Devin (Brown) stepped up in a big way, but what an unbelievable catch. I couldn’t believe he caught it,” said head coach Ryan Day following the game.
As always, Day faced inquiries about his star freshman, but one detail stood out that could make Smith even more formidable for opposing defenses: he’s beginning to come out of his shell.
“He does it every day in practice. He just doesn’t say a word but works his tail off,” Day explained. “His discipline and humility show how much he loves being a Buckeye. You can see it in the way he interacts with his teammates. He’s starting to come out of his shell a little bit too, which is great to see. The talent speaks for itself, but I’m particularly impressed with his discipline and hard work at such a young age. He came in with that work ethic, and (wide receivers coach Brian Hartline) has certainly helped him develop. This is a special young man.”
During the game, Smith exhibited a feisty demeanor, even engaging in a bit of banter with a Michigan State defender—an early sign of his blossoming confidence and competitiveness. Smith’s performance is anything but typical for a freshman; he plays with the poise of an experienced veteran.
So far this season, Smith has tallied 19 receptions for 364 yards and six touchdowns, positioning himself on track to break numerous freshman receiving records at Ohio State. With his current trajectory, it seems he will have little trouble accomplishing that goal.
With Smith’s continued development and rising confidence, Ohio State’s offense could become even more potent as the season progresses.
