The West Virginia Mountaineers are making significant strides in their ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks, an area of concern heading into the 2024 season. Defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley acknowledged that the depth of the defensive line rotation wouldn’t match the previous year’s standards, yet the return of key players like Edward Vesterinen, Sean Martin, and Fatorma Mulbah ensured a strong top-end talent.
One player who has had a monumental impact is Troy transfer T.J. Jackson, whose presence has nearly eliminated worries about the defensive line’s effectiveness. In just four games, he has amassed an astounding 20 pressures, leading the nation in this category. This is particularly impressive considering he didn’t even start in the first two games and has only accumulated 99 snaps in passing situations.
Jackson’s ability to disrupt the quarterback has set the tone for the team. Currently, West Virginia ranks fifth in the nation with a total of 85 quarterback pressures, trailing only Ole Miss, Auburn, Washington, and California.

Defensive line coach Andrew Jackson has consistently produced impressive results since joining the staff in 2021. Last season, the Mountaineers led the Big 12 Conference with 33 sacks, and while they have recorded nine sacks so far this season, they could easily have added another six or seven if they had managed to finish tackles against Pitt’s Eli Holstein more effectively.
As the season progresses, if West Virginia can elevate its secondary play, the defense will become significantly more formidable. This improvement will be crucial for the Mountaineers as they aim to compete for a conference title, reinforcing their aspirations for success in the 2024 season. With their defensive line showing such promise, the Mountaineers are poised to make an impact as the season unfolds.
