The Georgia Bulldogs are facing another challenge after senior wide receiver Colbie Young was arrested early Tuesday morning on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child. Young was booked at 4:18 AM with a bond set at $2,500 and, as of now, remains in jail. If the situation mirrors Rara Thomas’ battery arrest in July, Young could face suspension or dismissal from the team.
Time for London Humphreys to Step Up
With Young likely sidelined, it’s time for sophomore transfer wide receiver London Humphreys to take on a bigger role and fill the gap left by Young’s absence.
Humphreys, a 6-foot-2, 197-pound transfer from Vanderbilt, made a strong impression in Week 1’s win over Clemson, where he grabbed two catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, after his breakout debut, Humphreys wasn’t targeted in subsequent games and missed Georgia’s loss to Alabama due to a bout with mononucleosis. However, he made his return in Week 6 against Auburn, contributing two catches for 40 yards.
Kirby Smart expressed his surprise and excitement at Humphreys’ quick return to action, stating, “Oh, it was awesome. I mean, that was crazy to be where, I didn’t know how long it was gonna be, and then I get a call that he can play. I’m like, what? We thought it was gonna be a couple weeks. He’s so solid, he’s so reliable, and jumped right back in and did a good job.”
So far this season, Humphreys ranks fourth on the team among pass catchers with four receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown. Before transferring to Georgia, he had a productive year with Vanderbilt, recording 22 catches for 439 yards and four touchdowns in 2023.
As the Bulldogs now face uncertainty surrounding Young’s status, Humphreys is in a prime position to make an impact and boost the offense. With his combination of size, speed, and reliability, Humphreys has the opportunity to establish himself as a key weapon for Georgia moving forward.
Though the program has not yet commented on Young’s arrest, Kirby Smart is set to address the media on Tuesday evening, where more details on Young’s situation and the team’s plans could be revealed.
