Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart addressed the media on Wednesday, providing an update on wide receiver Colbie Young, who was arrested early Tuesday morning on charges of battery and assault. During the SEC’s weekly call, Smart confirmed Young’s indefinite suspension.
“I spoke with Colbie this morning, and he’s been suspended indefinitely until the legal matter is resolved,” Smart stated. “We can’t comment further on the specifics, but we had a good meeting, and we’re committed to educating our players and making sure they understand the gravity of these situations. It’s very unfortunate, but we want to make responsible decisions both on and off the field. This is a tough situation, but we’ll wait for the legal process to unfold.”
The arrest stemmed from an incident involving Young’s ex-girlfriend, who called the police after a heated argument in which she felt threatened. According to the incident report, Young allegedly “grabbed her left arm” and “picked her up, squeezing her torso and abdomen hard.” Young was booked at 4:18 a.m. on Tuesday, with a bond set at $2,500, and he was released later that afternoon.
Young’s attorney, Kim Stephens, disputed the allegations, stating, “Colbie Young was arrested after asking his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment. He did not make any physical contact that could be considered criminal. We expect him to be fully exonerated once the investigation is complete.”
Young, a senior transfer from Miami, has been an important contributor to the Bulldogs this season, tallying 11 catches for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns in five games. However, with his indefinite suspension, Georgia will turn to receivers like Dillon Bell and London Humphreys to fill the void in their upcoming matchup against Mississippi State this Saturday.
Georgia (4-1) remains a heavy favorite heading into the game, despite the absence of Young, as they look to build on their strong start to the season at Sanford Stadium.
