The Florida Gators will face a key home game without their top running back, Montrell Johnson Jr. The Gators (3-3, 1-2 SEC) will take on Kentucky (3-3, 1-3) on Saturday, missing Johnson due to a lower-body injury he sustained during last week’s 23-17 overtime loss to Tennessee.
Initially listed as questionable, Johnson was later ruled out for the game. However, head coach Billy Napier reassured fans that Johnson’s absence won’t be long-term. Johnson had an impressive performance in the Tennessee game, rushing for 85 yards on 12 carries, and has totaled 373 yards and four touchdowns this season, leading the Gators’ running backs.
Despite Johnson’s absence, the Gators have other options in their ground game. Running backs Treyaun Webb, Ja’Kobi Jackson, and Jadan Baugh will all be available. Webb, returning to action for the first time since Florida’s 45-28 win over Mississippi State, has rushed for 93 yards on 31 carries with one touchdown this season.
Jackson has averaged 5.7 yards per carry with 109 yards and three touchdowns this season, while Baugh has seen increased playing time, with 12 carries for 25 yards against Tennessee. Kentucky’s rush defense, ranked third in the SEC, will provide a tough challenge for Florida’s running backs.
Additionally, quarterback D.J. Lagway is now the starter, which may also help diversify the Gators’ running attack. Florida will be back in action next week for homecoming against Kentucky, with the game set for a 7:45 p.m. kickoff on SEC Network.
