West Virginia fans are increasingly upset with head football coach Neal Brown, especially after a recent loss to Iowa State and comments he made earlier this week that drew national attention. When asked to encourage fans to attend the Kansas State game, Brown said, “I get that they want to win. But did they have a good time? Did they enjoy it? It was a pretty good atmosphere. If they’re in it for enjoyment, I would come back.”
This response didn’t sit well with fans, leading Mountaineer supporter Curt Hurley to organize a fundraiser aimed at hiring a pilot to fly a banner reading, “Are you having fun? Fire Neal Brown” for three hours during the Kansas State game. The effort has raised $5,208 as of Saturday morning, with donations coming from several supporters, including one anonymous contribution of $842.
However, despite raising the necessary funds, logistical issues have delayed the banner flight. Hurley provided updates on the fundraising page, explaining that both the original and backup pilot backed out, but the money remains secure. If the banner cannot fly during the Kansas State game, Hurley plans to reschedule it for an upcoming home game or use the funds for billboards.
Hurley emphasized that the fundraiser was solely meant to send a message and assured donors that he will not keep any of the money for personal use. He also hinted that even though the banner hasn’t flown yet, the message has already been conveyed to the administration and fans.
Opinion:
While fans have every right to express their frustration, this approach feels excessive and unnecessary. If West Virginia wins the Kansas State game, improving to 3-1 in the Big 12, this effort will seem even more misguided. Rather than funding banners, why not support the team or donate to meaningful causes like the Country Roads Trust or the MAC? It’s better to show up and back the players instead of making a spectacle.
