Rookie wide receiver Jacob Cowing could be a significant asset for the 49ers if he’s given more chances in their offense.
Cowing initially seemed poised for an expanded role, especially after Brandon Aiyuk’s season-ending ACL and MCL injury against the Chiefs. Cowing filled in admirably, and with Jauan Jennings also sidelined, he looked likely to see more action against the Cowboys. Surprisingly, however, Cowing was barely utilized, with no targets and just 12 offensive snaps, fewer than Ronnie Bell’s 15. Bell, who even got a target, hasn’t shown the same potential.
Despite being a first-round pick, Ricky Pearsall was given the spotlight among the rookies, but Cowing’s limited play was still surprising. Bell’s mistakes have already contributed to past losses, including a costly interception against the Rams and another against the Chiefs, raising questions about why he is still on the field while Cowing, who has more promise, is sidelined.
Cowing has shown his talent, notably with a 41-yard play against the Chiefs where he demonstrated both speed and route-running skill. Drafted in the fourth round, the 49ers clearly saw immediate potential in him, but they need to actively involve him in their game plan to make the most of it.
Ultimately, the 49ers should reconsider Bell’s role and focus on maximizing Cowing’s impact. The difference between the two in terms of offensive contribution is clear, and the 49ers need to choose the player who can move them forward.
