Oklahoma Sooners tight end Kaden Helms has overcome nearly two years of injuries to score his first touchdown, marking a significant moment in Memorial Stadium during Oklahoma’s 59-14 victory over Maine. Helms, a redshirt sophomore, faced multiple setbacks since joining OU. After a knee injury and surgery sidelined him for his entire redshirt freshman year, he then suffered a hamstring injury, forcing him to miss additional time in 2024.
Despite these obstacles, Helms never gave up on his football dreams. During his recovery, he worked diligently on the JUGS Machine, sometimes even on a scooter, and gained respect as a tireless worker in the locker room. His teammates and coaches were deeply moved by his perseverance, with interim Offensive Coordinator Joe Jon Finley calling it a “great story.”
Helms’ first career touchdown came in the second quarter on a 9-yard pass from quarterback Jackson Arnold, extending Oklahoma’s lead to 49-7. The moment felt “surreal” for Helms, who said it was the result of a difficult yet rewarding journey. Teammates, including defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings and fellow tight ends Bauer Sharp, Jake Roberts, and Kade McIntyre, were quick to celebrate, reflecting the bond he has with them.
Helms credits his faith in Jesus Christ for helping him stay strong through the challenges, saying he believed God was guiding him through each trial. He’s now proud to be back on the field, knowing his persistence and faith led him to this meaningful achievement.
