Red Bull’s Christian Horner says Max Verstappen “silenced critics” with his remarkable comeback win at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen made a powerful statement by clinching victory at the Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, surging from a starting position of 17th on a wet track to claim his first win since June. This triumph was a response to recent controversies and criticism of his aggressive driving style, particularly after receiving penalties in the previous race in Mexico following clashes with Lando Norris.
Before the race in Brazil, former F1 champion Damon Hill had criticized Verstappen for using “intimidation” tactics, questioning the Red Bull driver’s methods on the track. Verstappen dismissed the criticism, suggesting that part of the scrutiny he faces comes from having the “wrong passport” for F1.
Horner commended Verstappen’s resilient response, noting that his Brazil performance expanded his championship lead to 62 points and demonstrated his ability to rise above the negative commentary. “There’s been a lot of talk and criticism of Max’s driving, but he responded the best way possible—with a phenomenal drive,” Horner told Motorsport Week. “It’s been a while since we celebrated a win like this, hearing The Rolling Stones play in the garage, something we do for Dietrich Mateschitz every time we win.”
Horner also highlighted Verstappen’s mental toughness, describing how Verstappen didn’t need any reassurance to handle the criticism. “He’s not the kind of driver who needs an arm around him,” Horner explained. “He has immense mental resilience and finds his own way to respond.”
Verstappen’s visible joy on the podium underscored the significance of this win for him and his team. “It was one of the most animated celebrations I’ve seen from him,” Horner added. “We witnessed one of the great drives in Formula 1 today.”
This victory not only strengthens Verstappen’s title defense but also reinforces his reputation as a driver who performs under pressure, even amid heightened scrutiny and criticism. With the championship lead solidified, Verstappen and Red Bull are now set for an intense season finish, driven by the kind of determination that has made Verstappen a dominant force in the sport.
