The Florida Gators showcased three key new players in their season-opening 98-83 win over USF, with Alijah Martin, Sam Alexis, and Rueben Chinyelu making notable contributions.
Alijah Martin:
Alijah Martin led the trio with a strong debut, finishing with 13 points despite a tough shooting night (3-for-12 from the field and 0-for-6 from three). His impact went beyond scoring, as he also contributed six rebounds, a team-high three assists, and four steals. Coach Todd Golden praised Martin’s rebounding, ball handling, and defensive efforts. Martin’s aggressive drives to the basket in the second half earned valuable free-throw opportunities, including some key and-1 plays that helped the team build momentum. His leadership and organization on the court were also highlighted by Coach Golden.
Rueben Chinyelu:
Center Rueben Chinyelu brought a physical presence to the floor in his Gators debut. Though he didn’t attempt a field goal, he contributed two points from free throws, grabbed four rebounds, and blocked a shot. Coach Golden commended Chinyelu’s defensive impact, rebounding, and screening, noting his ability to protect the paint and provide size and strength inside.
Sam Alexis:
Off the bench, forward Sam Alexis added energy and versatility, finishing with six points, four rebounds, one assist, and one block in just 13 minutes. His defensive ability to guard multiple positions, combined with his +10 plus/minus rating, made him a standout off the bench. Coach Golden hinted that Alexis could see more minutes in the future given his positive impact, noting his high basketball IQ and versatility as assets to the team.
With these debuts, the Gators secured their first win, showing promise and areas to build on as they move forward in the season.
