The 49ers are pleased with the progress of their young safeties, Ji’Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha, according to defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. The team has been working to inject youth into the safety position, drafting Brown in the third round two years ago and Mustapha in the fourth round this year. While Brown showed potential last season, he has yet to make the anticipated leap in his second year.
Mustapha, however, has impressed since stepping into a starting role against the Patriots, consistently making the most of his opportunities. Sorensen is encouraged by the development of both players, noting that they are becoming more comfortable and proactive on the field. “The more that we can let those guys play free and fast, the better they perform,” Sorensen explained, adding that both safeties are gaining valuable experience that’s accelerating their growth.
Though Mustapha has outperformed Brown so far, his primary challenge has been with tackling, while Brown has struggled in coverage and positioning. This is a natural learning curve, and with no veteran alternatives, the 49ers are committed to allowing these young players to grow despite occasional mistakes.
Brown showed signs of improvement before the Bye, highlighted by a key interception against the Cowboys. Sorensen believes both players will only continue to improve, provided they remain focused. “They care a lot,” Sorensen said, praising their communication and growing confidence, which he sees as a strong foundation for future success.
