Just before the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Philadelphia 76ers, guard D’Angelo Russell was moved to the bench, marking his second demotion from the starting lineup in as many seasons. This time, however, Russell seemed to embrace the shift.
“I just wanted to win,” Russell said after contributing 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting, along with three assists. “Whatever it took—change of plans, whatever Coach needs—just trying to get the win and be a part of that.”
Head coach JJ Redick made the difficult decision as Russell had been struggling on the floor. However, Russell’s positive attitude towards the change could benefit the Lakers.
Russell explained, “I left all that, all my baggage at the door this summer when the new staff came in. I was committed to whatever it takes. That’s what you see now.”
Russell likely recognizes his time in Los Angeles may be limited, as he’s been a frequent subject of trade rumors. By fully embracing this role, he may boost his trade value around the league. Redick commended him for his commitment to the role and desire to win.
“He’s accepted the role we’ve asked of him,” Redick noted. “He talks with me all the time, has a strong desire to win, and a strong desire to be coached. Our communication has been open and honest, and I believe it will continue that way.”
The Lakers went on to defeat the 76ers, with Russell scoring 18 points. After a rough 1-4 road trip, Los Angeles hopes this lineup change will provide the consistency needed to remain competitive.
