Chicago Bears fans have largely lost confidence in head coach Matt Eberflus. His inability to close out winnable games, build a consistent offense, and deliver wins has left many doubting he’s the right fit. Reports that players may be tuning him out are only adding to concerns. However, any decision on his future lies with GM Ryan Poles, team president Kevin Warren, and chairman George McCaskey, and there’s currently no official indication that Eberflus is on the brink of dismissal.
Until now, insiders have avoided confirming whether Eberflus is truly in danger. But just ahead of the team’s home game against the Patriots, Jeff Hughes of Da Bears Blog gave a straightforward answer that signaled Eberflus’ position is indeed at risk.
If the Bears lose to New England, it would drop them to 4-5, with challenging games ahead against NFC North rivals, the 49ers, and the Seahawks. Few would expect Eberflus to achieve a winning season, let alone a playoff spot, given such a schedule. Historically, the Bears don’t make midseason coaching changes, so it’s likely Poles and Warren are already evaluating future candidates.
If Eberflus wants to prove his leadership, now is the time to turn things around, starting with a win at home. Defeating the Patriots could give the Bears the momentum to face Green Bay competitively next week. But if the season continues as it has, Eberflus might be looking for new opportunities by January.
