Georgia’s performance is benefiting everyone except for Georgia itself, particularly when it comes to the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings.
The latest CFP rankings are puzzling, as Georgia jumped to No. 10 after defeating Tennessee, but some teams ahead of them seem less deserving. Teams like Indiana, Notre Dame, Texas, Miami (FL), and Penn State have better records, but their resumes fall short compared to Georgia’s. However, there’s another issue with the rankings that’s not being widely discussed.
While Georgia is clearly a strong team—evidenced by victories over Texas, Clemson, and Tennessee—its ranking doesn’t reflect that. The CFP committee acknowledges that Georgia is a good team, but their rankings don’t back it up. With the nation’s No. 1 strength of schedule and top-tier resume, Georgia still sits at No. 10, barely inside the playoff picture. This raises the question: why isn’t Georgia receiving the respect it deserves?
What’s even more perplexing is how much credit other teams are getting for beating Georgia. Ole Miss and Alabama are highly praised for their victories over Georgia, even though both teams have two losses. Texas is also getting credit for its lone loss to Georgia, despite being dominated by the Bulldogs and lacking any signature wins this season.
No one is denying that Ole Miss, Alabama, and Texas have impressive results against Georgia, but if these teams are being recognized for those outcomes, shouldn’t Georgia receive more credit for proving itself as a top-tier team?
