After Florida’s thrilling upset of LSU last week and Ole Miss’ history of struggles as favorites, Saturday’s matchup has the makings of a potential trap game for the Rebels.
Former NFL player and ESPN analyst Randall Cobb highlighted the timing of the game and Florida’s momentum as key factors. “Coming off a bye and facing a tough opponent like Florida after their big win is challenging,” Cobb said. “DJ Lagway was impressive throwing outside the numbers, which makes this a possible trap game.”
Though Florida’s 5-5 record doesn’t stand out, they’ve proven to be a formidable opponent, pushing top-ranked teams like Tennessee and Georgia. Against Tennessee, the Gators led for much of the game before narrowly losing in overtime, showcasing their defensive resilience. Similarly, Florida held their own against then-second-ranked Georgia, tying the game late into the fourth quarter.
Despite Ole Miss’ playoff aspirations, Florida’s focus remains on improving each week. Gators punter Jeremy Crawshaw acknowledged the stakes, saying, “Ole Miss is playing for a playoff spot, and a win for us would derail that. But our goal remains the same—to win every week, just as we’ve been doing.”
Offensive lineman Damieon George Jr. echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing that the team is focused on their own progress. “We’re not worried about spoiling their season. We’re focused on ourselves and getting better every week,” he said.
Ole Miss has shown vulnerability this season, notably falling to a 4-6 Kentucky team in September. However, the Rebels are still loaded with talent. Quarterback Jaxson Dart has racked up 3,409 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 304 rushing yards. Running back Henry Parrish has added 678 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, while wide receiver Tre Harris has posted 59 receptions for 987 yards and six touchdowns.
Defensively, Ole Miss is anchored by linebackers Chris Paul Jr. (72 tackles) and TJ Dottery (68 tackles), while standout defensive back Trey Amos leads the team with three interceptions and 11 pass breakups.
Florida’s Senior Day kicks off at noon, with coverage airing on ABC, as the Gators aim to keep their late-season momentum alive and potentially upset another SEC powerhouse.
