Jasmyne Roberts made a bold statement after Miami’s commanding 79-51 victory over Florida International University on Tuesday night, declaring the Hurricanes as the top team in Florida women’s basketball.
The game started with some struggles for Miami, as the Panthers held the lead for most of the first quarter. However, a crucial layup by Roberts tied the game, and the Hurricanes quickly gained momentum. Cameron Williams closed out the quarter with a basket, ending the period in a 19-19 tie.
Miami’s defense came alive in the second quarter, shutting down FIU’s offense with tight closeouts and forced turnovers. This defensive energy translated into offensive opportunities, with the Cavinder Twins using their speed to break through defenders and set up scoring plays. Darrione Rogers also stepped up, hitting two key three-pointers late in the quarter, helping Miami build a 40-27 halftime lead.
The third quarter saw a dip in the Hurricanes’ offensive output, with only 14 points added to the board. Still, Miami’s defense held strong, ensuring they outpaced the Panthers even during their weakest stretch.
Miami sealed their dominance in the fourth quarter, boasting a perfect 8-8 performance from the free throw line. The Hurricanes maintained their lead comfortably, finishing the game with a statement victory.
Key to Miami’s success this season has been contributions from new additions to the roster. Transfers Darrione Rogers, Natalija Marshall, Cameron Williams, and freshman Leah Harmon have all played pivotal roles, bringing fresh energy and talent to the team.
Now 4-0, the Hurricanes aim to extend their winning streak when they face Campbell on Friday night at the Watsco Center.
