Hugh Freeze’s future with Auburn football following a 5-7 season has been addressed by Alabama columnist Joseph Goodman.
In the wake of Auburn’s 28-14 loss to Alabama in the 2024 Iron Bowl, Goodman confirmed that Freeze will remain the Tigers’ head coach heading into 2025. Freeze’s job is secure for now, largely due to his ability to bring in one of the top recruiting classes in the country. With signing day just around the corner, Freeze could solidify his position if he manages to flip five-star cornerback Na’eem Offord from Ohio State to Auburn.
However, Goodman noted that Freeze will need to show significant improvement in 2025, or Auburn could be in the market for a new coach next year. Goodman speculated that Deion Sanders could be a potential replacement, but dismissed the idea, suggesting that Coach Prime wouldn’t want to take on Auburn’s boosters and culture. While the notion of Sanders coaching Auburn is an appealing “pipe dream” for many, it is unlikely.
The main issue for Freeze is whether he can turn Auburn around in 2025. With young talent in place, Freeze will need to avoid any major setbacks, especially with key recruits like quarterback Deuce Knight. The question remains: Will a 7-5 or 8-4 record be enough to save Freeze’s job? Auburn fans are growing frustrated with the ongoing losses, and while Freeze excels at recruiting, his play-calling in crucial moments has come into question.
Turning the program around won’t be easy, and determining what constitutes a successful turnaround for Freeze’s job security in 2026 remains a difficult challenge.
