Florida State’s recruiting efforts are undergoing a shift, with the Seminoles’ 2025 class currently ranked 52nd in the nation according to 247Sports Composite—a ranking well below their usual standards. To address this, FSU is bringing in UCF head coach Gus Malzahn as its new offensive coordinator and hiring Nebraska’s defensive coordinator Tony White to revamp the defense.
FSU head coach Mike Norvell is determined to turn things around after a disappointing 2-10 season, and with these coaching changes, the Seminoles are looking to reload their roster. In light of White’s hiring, there are a few Nebraska commits who could now consider flipping to Florida State.
Four-Star LB Dawson Merritt
Florida State has struggled to build depth at linebacker, with only one commit, four-star Ethan Pritchard, currently in the fold. Pritchard has remained committed despite FSU’s struggles, but more linebacker talent is needed. Four-star Dawson Merritt, who committed to Nebraska in November, could now be a target for the Seminoles. The change in defensive coordinators at Nebraska could create an opening for FSU to land Merritt, especially if they miss out on four-star Tavion Wallace.
Four-Star DE Malcolm Simpson
FSU has historically focused on developing talent in-house, and while the transfer portal has been a useful resource, the Seminoles are eager to build a strong defensive line through recruiting. Four-star defensive end Malcolm Simpson, from Hitchcock, Texas, could be a key addition. At 6’3″ and 255 pounds, Simpson would be a solid fit for FSU as they aim to rebuild their defensive line, joining other promising recruits like Kevin Wynn and Darryll and Mandrell Desir.
Four-Star LB Pierce Mooberry
Florida State’s linebacker corps is a key area of focus for the 2025 class. While Pritchard is committed, FSU needs additional talent, especially if they miss out on Wallace. One prospect to watch is four-star linebacker Pierce Mooberry from Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska. With another Nebraska native, four-star tight end Chase Loftin, already committed to FSU, Loftin could play a role in convincing Mooberry to join the Seminoles.
As FSU works to rebuild its recruiting class, the changes at Nebraska could present an opportunity to add these talented prospects to the fold.
