Alabama football signed one of the top recruiting classes in the nation but is expected to remain active in the Transfer Portal to address specific needs. Which position groups should the Crimson Tide prioritize?
Head coach Kalen DeBoer secured his first recruiting class for Alabama, which ranked No. 2 nationally according to ON3, trailing only Texas and finishing ahead of Oregon. The class features four five-star recruits, 14 four-stars, and four three-stars, including standout five-star quarterback Keelon Russell. It is a well-rounded group with potential contributors across the board.
However, to position the team for success next season, Alabama will need to utilize the Transfer Portal. The key areas of focus after early signing day are the front seven on defense, tight end, and wide receiver.
Defensive Front Seven
Alabama’s defense lacked its usual dominance this season, allowing 139.8 rushing yards per game and recording just 23 sacks—both low marks for the decade. Notably, their sack total ranked 15th out of 16 teams in the SEC, a steep decline from the 40 sacks recorded in 2023.
Injuries played a role in the struggles, but the defensive line and linebacker corps need reinforcements. Although Alabama signed three four-star linebackers and two four-star edge rushers, the team will lose key contributors such as seniors Tim Smith and Justin Jefferson, as well as potential NFL-bound players like Jihaad Campbell. Depth and experienced pass rushers are crucial additions.
Tight End
With starting tight ends CJ Dipree and Robbie Ouzts graduating, the position is another area of concern. Dipree contributed 19 receptions for 238 yards, while Ouzts, primarily a blocker, had seven catches for 83 yards and one touchdown.
While the recruiting class includes two four-star tight ends, and Josh Cuevas (No. 5 on the team in receptions) is set to return, Alabama may benefit from adding a pass-catching tight end. Such a player could complement quarterback Jalen Milroe’s game and provide a critical offensive weapon in 2025.
Wide Receiver
The wide receiver group remains in flux, with Kobe Prentice entering the Transfer Portal and other potential departures looming. While Alabama added two receivers in this year’s class, a seasoned veteran could provide immediate impact. An experienced route runner would bolster the offense and help Jalen Milroe distribute the ball effectively.
In summary, while Alabama’s recruiting class is strong, key additions from the Transfer Portal—especially in the defensive front seven, tight end, and wide receiver positions—will be essential to addressing gaps and competing at the highest level next season.
