On December 3rd, Kentucky’s wide receivers coach, Daikiel Shorts Jr., was hired by Nebraska, leaving the position vacant. While head coach Mark Stoops has kept quiet about plans to fill the role, he mentioned that offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan has some experience and could temporarily assist.
The vacancy has sparked speculation among fans and media, including a tweet from Kentucky reporter Chris Beasmore, who suggested former Wildcats Jeff Badet and Garrett Johnson as potential candidates for the position. Jeff Badet added fuel to the rumors with a cryptic response, replying to a fan’s comment with, “It just might be Brodie,” hinting at his potential interest in the role.
Although there have been no confirmed discussions between Badet and Kentucky, his interest in the job seems plausible. Badet played for Kentucky from 2013-2016 before transferring to Oklahoma, where he caught passes from Baker Mayfield during his Heisman-winning season. Afterward, Badet had stints in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders, as well as in the XFL and CFL, before being placed on the Toronto Argonauts’ retired list earlier this year.
Replacing Shorts will require more than just coaching expertise; Stoops is looking for someone who can shape the culture of the locker room and bring discipline to the program. According to 24/7 Sports’ Collin Kennedy, Badet could fit the bill perfectly. Kennedy praised Badet for his work ethic, character, and ability to mentor younger players, describing him as “a top-tier personality and mentor” whose influence could be invaluable to the team.
Whether Mark Stoops will consider Badet for the wide receivers coach position remains uncertain. However, it’s clear that Badet might be ready to step into the role if given the opportunity.
