In a hard-fought contest on Sunday, the University of Georgia women’s basketball team fell to Hampton 76-74 in overtime. Despite a well-rounded offensive effort and four players scoring in double figures, the Bulldogs couldn’t secure the win. Georgia led for much of the game and gained momentum, but turnovers and poor shooting from beyond the arc ultimately cost them. Hampton outscored Georgia 22-8 in the fourth quarter to force overtime, with Tyra Kennedy hitting a buzzer-beater to give the Pirates the victory.
Georgia shot 45.5% from the field, making 25 of 55 shots, but struggled with 3-point shooting, hitting only 4 of 17 attempts. Although the Bulldogs dominated the rebounding battle, 41-24, turnovers were a major issue, as they committed 32 throughout the game. However, Georgia was effective at the free-throw line, converting 20 of 26 attempts (76.9%). The bench also contributed significantly, adding 23 points to the effort.
Redshirt sophomore Fatima Diakhate led Georgia with a career-high 17 points, marking her third double-digit game of the season. Fifth-year senior Roxane Makolo also had a strong performance, scoring 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Junior Amiya Evans posted her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Asia Avinger contributed 12 points, rounding out the Bulldogs’ balanced scoring effort. Freshman Summer Davis made her first career start after a strong showing against Prairie View A&M, and this game marked the sixth time this season that Georgia had at least four players score in double figures.
The game was the first meeting between Georgia and Hampton since 1999, when Georgia won 107-46. The Bulldogs will aim to bounce back on Wednesday, Dec. 4, when they host Virginia Tech in the SEC/ACC Challenge at Stegeman Coliseum, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game broadcast live on SEC Network.
