Miami’s resume simply doesn’t compare to Alabama’s, and that’s why the Hurricanes are on the outside looking in for the College Football Playoff. Despite a better record, Miami’s overall strength of schedule and lack of signature wins make it difficult to justify placing them ahead of Alabama.
Miami, with a 10-2 record, dropped from No. 6 to No. 12 in the latest rankings, falling behind Alabama for what many expect to be the final playoff spot. While Miami boasts a stronger record, the selection process for the College Football Playoff focuses on factors like conference championships, strength of schedule, and head-to-head matchups.
The most glaring difference between the two teams is their strength of schedule. Miami’s schedule ranks No. 55, while Alabama’s sits at No. 17. Miami only faced two teams ranked in the top 30 of the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI), while Alabama faced seven, winning five of those matchups. Miami’s losses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse came against teams with relatively weaker records, while Alabama’s losses were to stronger opponents, including playoff contender Tennessee.
When it comes to victories, Miami’s best win was a high-scoring battle against an unranked Louisville team, while Alabama boasts wins over three ranked teams: Georgia, South Carolina, and LSU. Although Miami had a better win over South Florida, that alone doesn’t outweigh the overall strength of Alabama’s schedule and victories.
In the end, while Miami might have performed well against weaker opponents, Alabama’s stronger schedule, quality wins, and overall resume make it the more deserving team for a playoff spot.
