The Georgia Bulldogs are the 2024 SEC champions after a dramatic 22-19 overtime victory over the Texas Longhorns, overcoming adversity in a thrilling game. This win not only secures Georgia a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff but also likely guarantees them the No. 2 seed.
Georgia’s starting quarterback Carson Beck was sidelined after a hit on a Hail Mary at the end of the first half, but backup Gunner Stockton stepped up, leading the Bulldogs on a second-half touchdown drive and adding spark to the team’s rushing attack. Head coach Kirby Smart also dialed up a fake punt that helped Georgia extend its lead with a crucial field goal.
Dominating the line of scrimmage, Georgia out-rushed Texas 141 to 31 and tallied six sacks and 16 tackles for loss. The Bulldogs’ defense was a key factor, forcing three turnovers, including two interceptions by SEC Championship MVP Daylen Everette off Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.
This marks Georgia’s third SEC title under head coach Kirby Smart. Despite allowing Texas to rack up 112 more total yards, Georgia’s defense held strong, limiting Texas to field goals and preventing any red-zone touchdowns.
Running back Trevor Etienne had a standout performance, rushing for 94 yards on 16 carries and scoring two touchdowns, including the game-winning overtime score. This marked the second consecutive week that Georgia secured a walk-off touchdown to seal the victory.
