The Georgia Bulldogs secured the 2024 SEC Championship in dramatic fashion, defeating Texas 22-19 in overtime, despite losing their starting quarterback, Carson Beck, to an injury in the first half.
Beck, who had been leading the Bulldogs with poise, was hit hard on a Hail Mary attempt just before halftime and was forced to leave the game. In the locker room, it became clear that Beck wouldn’t return to action. “He couldn’t even grip the ball,” head coach Kirby Smart revealed. “His hand was completely numb. There was no way he could continue, so we turned to Gunner Stockton.”
With Beck out, backup quarterback Gunner Stockton stepped in and proved more than capable. He led Georgia on a crucial second-half touchdown drive, helping the Bulldogs stay in the game. Despite a late interception that nearly cost Georgia the win, Stockton remained composed and helped keep the team focused.
In overtime, Georgia turned to running back Trevor Etienne, who rushed for 94 yards on the day, including the game-winning 4-yard touchdown. Etienne’s performance was key, as he also had a touchdown earlier in the game, capping off a crucial offensive effort.
Georgia’s defense played a critical role, with SEC Championship MVP Daylen Everette snagging two interceptions from Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. The defense also forced three turnovers and kept Texas out of the end zone when it mattered most, allowing just field goals in the red zone.
The win marks Georgia’s third SEC Championship under head coach Kirby Smart and assures the Bulldogs of a top spot in the College Football Playoff, despite the adversity they faced on the field.
