Georgia head coach Kirby Smart appeared on ESPN’s College Football Playoff selection show on Saturday, where he provided an update on Carson Beck’s injury. While Smart couldn’t offer many details, he confirmed that Beck underwent an MRI and that the results should be available shortly.
“I’m still trying to get that knowledge myself,” Smart said. “He did have an MRI this morning, and we should have the results in the next few hours. We had a team meeting, and we’ll find out more soon.”
Beck was injured during the final play of the second quarter when Georgia opted for a 42-yard Hail Mary attempt instead of a 59-yard field goal. As Beck held the ball, he was hit by a Texas defender, causing a fumble that was recovered and returned into Georgia’s territory. However, no further damage occurred from the play, other than Beck’s injury.
After the play, Beck stayed on the field for a few minutes before being assisted by trainers. Despite the pain, he walked off the field under his own power, visibly limping and favoring his arm.
“He said his hand got hit as he was throwing,” Smart explained to ESPN’s Holly Rowe. “The defender came around the edge, and Carson needs to be aware of it and get rid of the ball quicker.”
Beck returned for the final play of the game, handing off to Trevor Etienne for a walk-off touchdown. However, Beck didn’t throw the ball after that and was seen with ice on both his elbow and shoulder on the sidelines.
