Georgia football has to be thrilled with their draw in the College Football Playoff.
After securing a victory over Texas in the SEC Championship game, Georgia quickly found out they earned the No. 2 seed in the 12-team CFP bracket, just behind No. 1 Oregon. While the top seed is always the goal, it turns out the No. 2 spot in this year’s playoff might actually offer a more favorable path.
Georgia’s favorable road to the CFP
In the first round, Georgia will face the winner of the matchup between 7-seed Notre Dame and 10-seed Indiana. Both teams are relatively unproven, with Indiana having faced only one strong opponent all season, losing 38-15 to Ohio State. Notre Dame, on the other hand, has struggled to secure impressive victories, with their best win likely being a road win over Texas A&M in Week 1. Their loss to Northern Illinois further highlights their lack of dominance. Considering these factors, Georgia fans have to be excited about their potential first-round opponent.
Looking ahead to the semifinal, Georgia’s possible opponents are also less intimidating. They could face 3-seed Boise State, 6-seed Penn State, or 11-seed SMU—none of which are likely to pose a major challenge. These matchups appear to be favorable for Georgia, providing them a clear path to the National Championship.
Though a tough National Championship game looms, Georgia’s road to that point is much smoother than the path of teams in the other half of the bracket. With 1-seed Oregon, 5-seed Texas, 8-seed Ohio State, and 9-seed Tennessee all on the other side, those teams pose more difficult challenges than any potential opponent for the Bulldogs.
While Kirby Smart and Georgia still have to win these games, their road to the National Championship is unquestionably easier than any other team in the field.
