Bear Alexander’s college career has been anything but ordinary.
The transfer portal has sparked significant debate in college football since its inception, with both positive and negative impacts on the game. One of the key criticisms is how players increasingly opt out of games early in the season to preserve their eligibility for a redshirt year, allowing them to transfer in the offseason. While opting out of bowl games has been a trend for years, this season has seen more players sitting out just a few games to prepare for a transfer.
Former Georgia defensive tackle Bear Alexander is one such player. After spending his freshman season with Georgia in 2022, where he recorded just nine tackles and two sacks, Alexander transferred to USC. His 2023 season with the Trojans was much more successful, as he posted 47 tackles. Heading into the 2024 season, expectations were high for Alexander. However, after USC’s third game of the season, he chose to sit out the remainder of the year, preserving his redshirt to transfer once again.
Since entering the portal, Alexander has not received any indications that Georgia or coach Kirby Smart are interested in bringing him back, especially given his departure and his decision to sit out at USC. It remains to be seen how other programs will approach recruiting Alexander, but it will be interesting to watch how his transfer journey unfolds.
