Georgia Football Loses Another Starter for the Season: Special Teams Take a Major Hit
Georgia football’s win over Texas in the SEC Championship came at a cost, as the team has now lost another key starter for the remainder of the season.
While the injury to quarterback Carson Beck’s right elbow was already known, with the team confirming his UCL injury and that he’s seeking treatment, Beck isn’t the only player sidelined. Punter Brett Thorson also suffered a season-ending injury during the second half of Saturday’s game. Thorson tore almost every ligament in his left knee while making a play on a Texas returner, and he will require surgery to repair the damage.
Fortunately for Thorson, it’s not his kicking leg, so while his recovery will be lengthy, it shouldn’t hinder his future career. However, his injury presents a major setback for Georgia’s special teams. A top-tier punter like Thorson, who averages 47.6 yards per punt—ranking No. 7 in the nation—has been crucial in flipping the field when the offense stalls.
The challenge now is replacing Thorson. The backup punter is freshman Drew Miller, who has yet to record a punt in college. This leaves Georgia with an interesting situation as they head into the Sugar Bowl on January 1, where Miller could be called on to perform in a high-stakes game.
