Asa Newell is proving to be a major force for Georgia basketball this season, and opponents should be on alert.
If you haven’t jumped on the Georgia basketball bandwagon yet, now’s the time. The Bulldogs are off to a red-hot 8-1 start after a dominant 69-48 win over Notre Dame this past week, marking their third Power Five victory of the season. Under head coach Mike White, Georgia is quickly gaining attention, even though they’ve yet to crack the AP Top 25. However, their strong performances have earned them enough votes to sit at No. 43 in the country.
A major reason for Georgia’s impressive start is freshman sensation Asa Newell. The highly touted five-star recruit has lived up to the hype, and his standout performances have earned him his second SEC Freshman of the Week award of the season.
Newell Dominates Against Notre Dame
Against the Irish, Newell scored 20 points, tied his career high with 11 rebounds, and notched his second double-double of the season. He also contributed two assists and a steal, showcasing his all-around game. This performance was more than enough to earn him SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time.
With a long season ahead, Georgia is on track to make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015. If they achieve that goal, Newell’s elite play will undoubtedly be one of the biggest reasons why.
