For the first time in history, Kentucky and Colgate will face off on the basketball court as the Raiders travel from Hamilton, New York, to Rupp Arena for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday. This game, however, holds a special significance, as it will honor the memory of Ephraim Woods, a former Colgate professor and lifelong Kentucky basketball fan who passed away last year.
Woods, originally from Ashland, Kentucky, remained a devoted Wildcats supporter even after his career took him to Colgate University in 2003. Over time, he also became an enthusiastic supporter of Colgate basketball. Known for his active involvement, Woods frequently attended practices and served as the leader of Colgate’s faculty liaison program with student-athletes. His presence left a lasting impact on the team, as Colgate head coach Matt Langel fondly recalled.
“He made sure to connect with the team and build relationships with individual players,” Langel said. “Everyone knew who he was.”
Knowing Woods’ passion for both Kentucky and Colgate basketball, Langel worked for years to schedule a game between the two programs. Finally, a date became available this season. To honor Woods’ memory, his family will accompany the Raiders to Lexington for the game.
Reflecting on Woods’ legacy, Langel shared how much the professor meant to him personally and professionally. “Playing Kentucky and making the trip will be emotional in a good way,” Langel said. “It’s a chance to remember all the lessons I learned from him and to celebrate his incredible impact.”
The game will be a heartfelt tribute to a man who bridged the gap between two programs and left an indelible mark on both communities.
