The addition of quarterback Thomas Castellanos is a crucial win for Florida State.
After finishing the 2024 season with a dismal 2-10 record, a painful reality for FSU fans, the team has to focus on a brighter future. While the season was one to forget, it likely paved the way for necessary coaching changes and player departures. Best of luck to those moving on, though not if they end up at rivals like Florida or Miami.
As Florida State enters the offseason, one major question looms: Who will be the quarterback for the Seminoles? To bridge the gap between young quarterbacks Luke Kromenhoek and Brock Glenn, FSU added veteran DJ Uiagalelei. Unfortunately, an injury to Uiagalelei during the SMU game forced Kromenhoek and Glenn into action, but neither showcased the consistency needed to secure the starting job for 2025. The result was a historically poor offensive performance.
In response, FSU hired former UCF head coach Gus Malzahn as the new offensive coordinator, known for his spread-option offensive system. Just as unexpectedly, Kromenhoek entered the transfer portal, leaving fans disheartened by the loss of a former five-star prospect.
However, FSU quickly filled the void by bringing in former Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos, who played under Malzahn during his time at UCF. Malzahn had hand-picked Castellanos to be his quarterback, and this familiarity is key. Although FSU had initially recruited him as a running back in 2022, Castellanos’ experience with Malzahn’s system makes him an ideal fit for the Seminoles.
While Coach Mike Norvell has faced criticism for the disastrous 2024 season, he knows the pressure is on for 2025. With a high-stakes game against Alabama looming, Norvell can’t afford another disappointing year. Despite concerns over Castellanos’ passing ability and previous struggles, the move to bring him in represents a “win-now” strategy. Norvell trusts Malzahn’s judgment and sees Castellanos as the best option for immediate success, avoiding the risk of relying on Kromenhoek’s growing pains.
