Auburn football transfer portal target Maalik Murphy recently shared his positive experience after speaking with head coach Hugh Freeze during his visit to the Plains. Murphy appreciated the open and honest conversation with Freeze, which helped him form a favorable opinion of Auburn as he considers his next destination.
“I had a great conversation with the coach, talking about football and life. He was very open, and everyone from the recruiters to the GAs made me feel welcome. It’s a good place with good people,” Murphy said (h/t On SI).
Murphy’s visit to Auburn left a positive impression, as he explored the facilities and met with coaches for the first time. “It checked a lot of boxes for me,” he added. “I liked everything I saw here, for sure.”
Murphy is among several quarterbacks Auburn is targeting in the transfer portal. The team may also face competition from Mississippi State for Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold, as well as a potential bidding war with Colorado for Liberty’s Kaidon Salter.
If Auburn fails to land a quarterback from the portal, Freeze will rely on incoming blue-chip recruit Deuce Knight in 2025, alongside current freshman Walker White. With Payton Thorne out of eligibility and Hank Brown and Holden Geriner exploring transfer options, Auburn’s quarterback situation is in flux.
