Florida State football has made a series of significant coaching changes, highlighted by the announcement that assistant coach John Papuchis will transition to the role of linebackers coach for the 2025 season. Papuchis, who has spent the past five seasons as the defensive ends coach, will retain his responsibilities as special teams coordinator but will give up his title overseeing the defensive line.
This move comes as new defensive coordinator Tony White is expected to implement a shift from the Seminoles’ traditional 4-3 defense to a 3-3-5 scheme. With the defensive front transitioning under White’s direction, former NFL player and new defensive line coach Terrance Knighton will take over responsibility for the entire defensive line.
Head coach Mike Norvell expressed confidence in Papuchis’ ability to excel in his new role, citing his extensive experience coaching linebackers. “JP has a wealth of experience coaching linebackers,” Norvell said in the announcement. “I’m excited for him to have a hands-on impact on that group while also continuing to be our special teams coordinator. He is an elite coach who has helped numerous players reach the NFL and guided one of the nation’s best special teams units throughout our time here.”
In addition to Papuchis’ move, FSU also announced that Ernie Sims will serve as the assistant linebackers coach, bringing further depth to the defensive staff. Austin Tucker will also take on a new role as the assistant wide receivers coach, completing the reshaped coaching staff.
These changes signal a new era for FSU’s defense, with an emphasis on versatility and depth. As the Seminoles look to evolve under White’s leadership, the reshuffling of the coaching staff promises to bring fresh energy to key positions heading into the 2025 season.
