An Iowa-based outlet offered an intriguing perspective on the Hawkeyes’ addition of former Auburn quarterback Hank Brown from the transfer portal. Tyler Tachman of The Des Moines Register acknowledged the move without overhyping it but suggested that Brown has the potential to make an impact in Iowa’s quarterback room.
Tachman placed the responsibility on Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester to refine Brown’s raw talent and develop him into a competent starting quarterback. “It’s still too early in Lester’s tenure to judge his progress with signal callers, but the hope is that Lester can help improve the position. Brown should be an interesting case study,” Tachman wrote.
While Brown may not be the flashiest or most experienced transfer, Tachman sees long-term potential in him, though he emphasized that there’s still much work to be done in his development. This presents a test for Lester, as he has the chance to shape Brown into a polished player with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Brown struggled to fit into Phil Montgomery’s offense at Auburn in 2023, and with little support from the coaching staff, he didn’t have the chance to prove himself. After one tough half against Arkansas in 2024, Brown was benched but eventually started against New Mexico. However, it’s unclear if he was Freeze’s choice or directed by higher-ups.
Now, Brown embarks on a new chapter in his college career with Iowa, looking to prove himself and capitalize on this second opportunity.
