The Kentucky Wildcats are making big moves to address their most pressing issue from the 2024 football season: the offensive line. Rated among the worst in the SEC and near the bottom nationally, Kentucky’s line struggles were a glaring problem. But head coach Mark Stoops has turned to the transfer portal for solutions, and the Wildcats have secured a major addition in Joshua Braun, a standout guard from Arkansas.
Braun, an All-SEC guard during his time with the Razorbacks, brings a wealth of experience and proven talent to Kentucky’s interior line. His presence was instrumental in Arkansas finishing 42nd nationally in rushing offense last season, defying expectations. Braun’s ability to anchor the line and open running lanes helped propel the Razorbacks’ ground attack, a strength Kentucky desperately needs to replicate.
Head coach Mark Stoops envisions a power-running game as the cornerstone of the Wildcats’ offense. A strong ground attack not only fuels the passing game but also aligns with Stoops’ preference for controlling the clock and dominating time of possession. Kentucky’s struggles in both rushing and passing last season made that philosophy untenable.
The Wildcats showed flashes of potential last season with the emergence of freshman running back Jamarion Wilcox. Despite early-season hiccups, including drawing Stoops’ ire for losing his shoes on the field, Wilcox showcased explosiveness and playmaking ability. With Braun clearing the way, Wilcox could be poised for a breakout year, giving Kentucky the offensive balance it sorely lacked.
Adding Braun is just the beginning for Stoops and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan as they continue rebuilding the offensive line. The hope is that Braun’s leadership and talent will not only solidify the line but also attract other top-tier transfers to bolster Kentucky’s front.
For the Wildcats, Braun represents more than just a transfer — he’s a cornerstone for the turnaround Kentucky needs in 2025.
