Lamont Butler turned in one of the most memorable performances in the history of the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry, leading the Wildcats to a 93-85 victory over their bitter rivals. Despite concerns over his availability due to an ankle injury, the San Diego State transfer left no doubt on the court, delivering a career-best 33 points and a flawless shooting performance that kept the Wildcats in control throughout the game.
Butler, who had missed the previous two games while recovering, was perfect from the field, going 10-for-10, including 6-for-6 from behind the arc. In addition to his scoring, he contributed six assists and three rebounds, making him a true all-around force in the game.
Head coach Mark Pope praised Butler’s performance, calling it “one of the all-time greatest performances in the history of this super special game.” Butler’s ability to dominate at both ends of the court proved to be the difference-maker, helping Kentucky secure their 10th win of the season.
“Lamont Butler was magnificent. I still see that kid in my nightmares,” said Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey, acknowledging the impact Butler had in the high-stakes showdown.
Butler’s career performance earned him multiple accolades, including being named the Battle of the Bluegrass MVP, as he was instrumental in securing Kentucky’s first win over Louisville since the 2020-21 season. His 33 points were just one shy of Derrick Miller’s single-game record for points against Louisville, and he tied the record for the most three-pointers made in the rivalry with six.
Statistical notes from the win include Butler becoming just the fourth player in UK history to go 10-for-10 or better in a game. The others on that list include Rodney Dent (12) vs. Morehead State in 1993, Kenny Walker (11) vs. Western Kentucky in 1986, and Justin Edwards (10) vs. Alabama last season.
Without Butler’s extraordinary performance, Kentucky might have faced a difficult defeat, as Louisville was hungry for its first win at Rupp Arena since the 2007-08 season. But thanks to Butler’s heroics, Kentucky now stands at 10-1 and looks poised for further success as the season progresses.
For Butler, the performance not only solidified his place in Kentucky basketball lore but also set the stage for a season filled with promise.
