In a significant move for the Clemson Tigers, Southeast Missouri State wide receiver Tristan Smith has committed to join the team, marking Dabo Swinney’s first-ever transfer portal addition.
Smith, who dazzled in the 2024 season with 76 receptions for 934 yards and six touchdowns, made the announcement on his Instagram on Monday. His most recent performance in the FCS playoffs saw him record 10 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown in a first-round win over Illinois State.
Before his standout season at SEMO, Smith spent two years at Hutchinson Community College, where he progressively improved his numbers. In 2023, he caught 14 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown.
At Clemson, Smith will bolster a wide receiver corps that didn’t have a 1,000-yard receiver during the regular season but has shown a strong collective effort under quarterback Cade Klubnik. With eight receivers surpassing 100 yards this year, Smith could be an instant contributor in Clemson’s dynamic offense.
Smith’s arrival is a pivotal moment for Clemson as they head into the College Football Playoff, with a crucial game against Texas on the horizon. The Tigers, who secured the final spot in the 12-team playoff after defeating SMU in the ACC Championship, will now look to build on this new addition to their roster.
The transfer portal opened on December 9, 2024, with over 2,700 players entering the market. Smith’s commitment to Clemson marks an exciting start for the Tigers as they enhance their roster for both the present and future.
