The Kentucky Wildcats are actively hunting for a veteran quarterback to strengthen their roster for the 2025 season. Recent developments suggest movement on this front as the Wildcats host one potential candidate and show interest in another.
Duke transfer quarterback Maalik Murphy is currently visiting Kentucky, with his stay extending through Tuesday, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Murphy, a towering 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect with two seasons of eligibility remaining, brings an intriguing mix of experience and potential.
Murphy began his college career at Texas as a 2022 recruit, where he redshirted and saw limited action in 2023. After transferring to Duke, he thrived as the Blue Devils’ starter this season, throwing for 2,933 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 60.3% of his passes. He also added two rushing scores and earned a respectable 75.6 Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade.
Meanwhile, Kentucky is also eyeing Incarnate Word quarterback Zach Calzada, according to Nick Roush of KSR. Although a visit hasn’t been scheduled yet, Calzada’s name adds another layer of intrigue to Kentucky’s quarterback search.
Calzada, a 2019 recruit, initially played for Texas A&M, where he gained attention in 2021 by leading the Aggies to a memorable victory over then-No. 1 Alabama. After transferring to Auburn and undergoing shoulder surgery, Calzada found success at Incarnate Word, throwing for 3,744 yards, 35 touchdowns, and nine interceptions this season, along with 332 rushing yards and five scores.
Both Murphy and Calzada offer unique strengths. Murphy presents an impressive physical profile and leadership potential, while Calzada brings a proven track record and a history of excelling under pressure.
The Wildcats’ quarterback room could see a major upgrade depending on how these pursuits unfold, and fans will eagerly await updates as Kentucky aims to solidify its 2025 roster.
