As Clemson gears up for its College Football Playoff showdown against No. 5 seed Texas this Saturday, head coach Dabo Swinney delivered pivotal updates regarding the health of key offensive players, shedding light on challenges the Tigers may face.
RB Jay Haynes Out for the Season
Swinney began with difficult news, confirming that freshman running back Jay Haynes underwent ACL surgery following an injury sustained during the ACC Championship Game against SMU.
“Unfortunately, we lost Jay Haynes,” Swinney said. “He had surgery this morning and is now on the road to recovery.”
Haynes, who had emerged as an explosive option late in the season, finishes his freshman campaign with 295 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 43 carries. His absence leaves senior Phil Mafah as the primary back, but concerns remain over his shoulder injury.
Phil Mafah Battling Through Injury
Despite being the workhorse for Clemson this season with 1,106 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, Mafah has struggled in recent weeks, averaging fewer than 50 yards per game over the last four contests.
“Nobody is 100%,” Swinney admitted. “Mafah’s got to have postseason surgery, but he’ll give everything he’s got. We’ll need to rely on our depth at running back.”
Mafah’s ability to contribute effectively will be crucial, as Clemson faces a formidable Texas defense in their playoff matchup.
QB Cade Klubnik Expected to Play Despite Bruised Hand
Clemson’s quarterback and Austin native Cade Klubnik also appeared on the injury report, with noticeable bandaging on his left hand during the ACC title game. Swinney downplayed the concern, stating, “He’s alright. If he’s got to throw left-handed, we’ll be in trouble.”
Klubnik, who grew up a Texas fan, will play in front of his hometown crowd in what promises to be a defining moment of his career.
What’s at Stake
With their backfield depth tested and questions surrounding the offensive unit, Clemson must rely on grit and resilience against a strong Texas squad. The Tigers’ offense will need to be firing on all cylinders if they hope to advance to the CFP National Championship.
Kickoff is set for Saturday, and the eyes of the nation will be on Klubnik, Mafah, and the rest of the Tigers as they take on the Longhorns in a high-stakes battle.
